An effective way to fix wifi coverage in your home (works for most houses)

Do you have patchy wifi in your home and are not sure of the best way to fix it? There are numerous products on the market. Some are effective and some so not so much. Some are not reliable or require a different password to your main modem/router.

What are the common ways to solve wifi coverage issues in a house?

Typical solutions include wifi extenders (you can purchase wifi extenders from places like JB Hifi, Bunnings, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman etc..), wifi boosters, powerline adaptors and ethernet outlets.

A highly effective, inexpensive way to fix wifi coverage

There’s another way which is rarely mentioned but, in most cases, is extremely effective and very cost effective. It’s to simply relocate your modem/router to a more central part of your home. That’s it! Simple.

You see, most modems/routers tend to be installed near an outlet edge of a property. Often that was the easiest option for the installer. And having the modem installed at one end of a house can often result in patchy wifi coverage at the other end of the house.

There’s also a way to test that this will work so you can eliminate any risk. Simple run a long coaxial cable (temporarily) across your floor to the area you have in mind – then walk around you house testing for coverage. If that location solves the problem then get an installer (like Tiger Antennas 🙂 ) to run the cable properly (ie, under the house, through the roof through wall cavities etc..).

An example of a customer in Thornleigh we did this for

We have done probably hundreds of these modem relocations over the years. This is a recent one:

A customer in Thornleigh has a single-level house with pretty good access under the house and a downstairs section at the back of the house (the front part of the house is single level). The modem and router were located in the downstairs section and they had a smart tv in the top section at the front of the house. Wifi to that area wasn’t great. We relocated the outlet, modem and router to the upstair lounge room Wifi in that section was then fantastic.

For customers in the Hornsby area (and as far out as Berowra Heights, Pymble etc..) we can do that over-the-floor test for you for free. It generally takes around 20 minutes and you’ll then know if that would solve the problem for you. If it does and you wish to get it done properly the cost in generally somewhere between $120 and $190 depending on the house.
