Is It Worth Purchasing an Extended Warranty on a TV?

This is a question we’re often asked by customers who are about to buy a new TV.

In the past, when TVs and many other appliances were built to last, extended warranties often weren’t worth the extra money. These days, however, we frequently see TVs developing issues after just 3 or 4 years—sometimes even sooner.

But, as with most things these days, extended warranties can vary greatly—not only between brands but also from one retailer to another.

What Warranty Do TVs Typically Come With?

It depends on the brand and model.

  • Some TVs, like those from TCL, come with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty out of the box.
  • Within the Sony range, some models come with a 1-year warranty, while others include a longer warranty as standard.
  • Many TVs generally come with a 12-month warranty, but certain retailers—like JB Hi-Fi Hornsby—may extend that to 2 years as part of their offering.

How Long Do Extended Warranties Last?

Most extended warranties cover your TV for up to 5 years total, including the standard warranty period.

How Much Do Extended Warranties Cost?

At JB Hi-Fi Hornsby (as of April 2025):

  • For TVs over $1,000, the extended warranty costs 15% of the TV price.
  • For TVs under $1,000, the cost is 20% of the price.

Are There Extra Benefits to an Extended Warranty?

Yes—more than you might think.

Even if your TV develops issues during the standard warranty period, having an extended warranty can help. Manufacturers may sometimes push back when dealing directly with customers, making claims difficult. But when you purchase an extended warranty through a reputable retailer, the retailer handles the claim process on your behalf. Because retailers buy in bulk, manufacturers are more likely to cooperate, resulting in faster and smoother service for you.

Tips

Tip 1:
End-of-financial-year sales are a great time to buy. Retailers often clear out current-year models at discounted prices—and that can include discounts on extended warranties too.

Tip 2:
Some retailers offer additional benefits for larger TVs. For example, TVs over 50” may include free home pickup if a repair is needed.

Tip 3:
Always ask what’s included in the extended warranty. At JB Hi-Fi Hornsby, for instance, if your TV has an issue, they’ll attempt up to two repairs. If problems persist, they’ll replace the TV.

Summary

While doing your research on TVs, don’t forget to ask your local salesperson about:

  • The standard warranty for the TVs you’re considering
  • The cost of an extended warranty
  • What’s included in the extended warranty

It could save you time, stress, and money in the long run.
